The UK may not have theme parks the size of Disney World or Universal Studios, but it does have its fair share. If you need some inspiration, look no further than this pocket guide, which takes a look at three family friendly theme parks in the UK.

Thorpe Park, Surrey

Thorpe Park claims to be An Island like no other. Situated just off the M25 at Junction 9 in Surrey, it originally targeted teens and young adults with its thrilling rides, but since 2014 has taken a broader family-orientated approach.

Major attractions include several roller-coasters such as Nemesis Inferno, which was built in 2003: reaching top speeds of 50mph, with four inversions on its circuit, the ride is 95 feet tall and 2,460 feet long.

For its teen market, the park introduced Saw-The Ride, themed to the film franchise of the same name, and with its beyond vertical drop of 100 degrees, the steepest roller coaster drop in the world when it opened.

Derren Brown’s Ghost Train opened in 2016 at a cost of £30million. The ride incorporate virtual reality, motion stimulation and illusions, designed in collaboration with British mentalist Derren Brown. The ride lasts 13 minutes, and the virtual reality includes  an animated train crash and guests “falling” from the train into a fiery pit of hell.

For younger guests, Angry Birds themed land includes a 10-minute long film with 4D effects, themed dodgems and a drop tower ride. Beach area Amity Beach has pools and waterslides, and The Jungle has a number of rides suitable for younger family members.

Our verdict: something for all ages

Paulton’s Park, Hampshire

Paulton’s Park claims to be the UK’s number one family theme park with more than 70 rides set in 140 acres of parkland on the edge of the New Forest. It’s also home to the world’s first Peppa Pig World.

The park has themed worlds, to help guests navigate the park. The Lost Kingdom is home to dinosaur-themed attractions including The Flight of the Pterosaur, an inverted thrill ride that reaches speeds of 30mph, or the Velociraptor with its drops, tights turns and 40pmh speeds.

Critter Creek is a toddler’s delight, with the Cat-o-Pillar Coaster and Professor Blast’s Expedition Express. And for many, Peppa Pig World is the main draw. Jump in muddy puddles, hop aboard Grampy Rabbit’s Sailing Club or take a tour of the latest extensions to the park on The Queen’s Flying Coach Ride. As far as theme parks go, this one is ideal for families with young children.

Our verdict: best for families with younger children

Legoland, Windsor

Legoland claims its resort is built for kids and is mainly targeted at children between 3 and 12 years old. In 2016, the park welcomed 2.138 million visitors, making it the most visited theme park in the United Kingdom and the 10th-most visited in Europe, and for Lego fans old and young, it lives up to its slogan – Awesome Awaits.

The park has 12 themed lands, incorporating various rides, attractions, restaurants and shops. Underwater adventure awaits in the Atlantis Submarine Voyage. Take to the air on the Balloon School simulator or battle the elements with the NINJAGO heroes in the 4D interactive ride. Visit the kingdom of the pharaohs, the land of the Vikings or pirate shores to interact with history, one brick at a time. Look out for special events too.

Our verdict: best for kids, no matter how old they are
