The Maldives or Bali may be more synonymous with sunny getaways, but there are alternatives in Europe when you don’t feel like travelling far and want a quick blast of the sun. From the tiny pockets of volcanic sands of Sorrento to the long, sandy beaches of the Algarve, Europe has many gorgeous places to get some well-needed sunshine without flying halfway across the world.

Sorrento, Italy

Sorrento is blessed with a sunny, Mediterranean climate, making it an ideal choice to indulge in a much-needed R&R while soaking up the sunshine. Even in winter, temperatures in Sorrento are warm enough to take on outdoor excursions.

When it comes to beach days, head to Marina Grande, a picturesque fishing village renowned for its beautiful beaches and numerous bars and restaurants. After working on your tan, visit one of the beachside restaurants to sample delectable fresh seafood while enjoying the stunning views of the Bay of Naples.

Hvar, Croatia

Croatia is home to some of the world’s most beautiful islands, and Hvar is one of these. As one of the sunniest European islands, Hvar is the perfect destination for a sun-soaked holiday. It’s a sophisticated party island with a reputation for being the destination of choice for well-heeled visitors. Many tourists choose to visit Croatia by luxury cruise, an excellent way to see many of the islands in one trip.

Even if you’re here to party, you should take time to explore its many stunning beaches. Visit Falko Beach, which has a bar and restaurant. After spending some time swimming in its pristine waters, treat yourself to a refreshing cocktail. Or better yet, lounge at one of the hammocks by the water.

Lanzarote, Spain

Located only a few miles away from Africa’s Saharan coast, Lanzarote is one of the best places in Europe to enjoy the winter sun. It’s one of the largest Canary Islands, offering a combination of beautiful sandy beaches, mouth-watering seafood dishes, and striking volcanic landscapes.

You’ll have plenty of choices for the best beaches in Lanzarote. The resort beaches of Puerta del Carmen and Costa Teguise are some of the most popular on the islands. But if you prefer somewhere more tranquil, visit Playa de Papagayo reserve, which has calm turquoise waters.

The Algarve, Portugal

The Algarve region of Portugal boasts more than 300 days of sunshine each year, drawing tourists who want to lounge at its long stretches of golden sands. It’s also a popular destination amongst avid surfers, or anyone looking to relax in a luxury villa in Portugal, with lots to choose from around the region.

Praia do Camilo is one of the Algarve’s most gorgeous beaches, surrounded by high cliffs and has clear green waters with views that open to Lagos and the Ponta da Piedade rock formations. If you’re into surfing, head to Arrifana, which features a crescent-shaped wave and is ideal for beginners due to its consistent waves.

Tenerife, Spain

Tenerife enjoys year-round sunshine, with many beautiful beaches and vibrant nightlife. Thus, it’s a great choice if you’re looking for a sunny European getaway.

You’ll find many stunning beaches all over Tenerife, and Playa de las Teresitas is the best among them. It has a long and wide coastline, giving you plenty of space to lounge around and work on your tan.
