El Nido de Quetzalcóatl Architecture

El Nido de Quetzalcóatl, is a residential complex created by architect Javier Senosiain. This project is a reflection of his passion for organic architecture and the importance of preserving the environment. The project was a challenging one, as the terrain on which it was built was irregular, covering an area of 5,000 square metres. However, with time, dedication, and creativity, Senosiain and his team were able to create a residential complex comprising 10 apartments, surrounded by gardens, water mirrors, and a forest of oaks. The result is a masterpiece of organic architecture that merges seamlessly with the surrounding environment.

Quetzalcóatl the Aztec God

The name “El Nido de Quetzalcóatl” is derived from the mythical Aztec God, Quetzalcóatl, who was revered as the creator of life and the guardian of nature. The main structure of the complex is shaped like a serpent, which is a representation of Quetzalcóatl. The design is intended to be a modern interpretation of the traditional Mexican architecture that Senosiain grew up with, but with a unique and contemporary twist. The building process was challenging, as the design required the use of unconventional building materials and techniques. The serpent’s undulating body has curved walls and ceilings that create a sense of fluidity and movement. Made of ferrocement in iridescent colour, combines golden emerald with a deep violet-blue, reminiscent of the feathers of the quetzal.

The Design

The serpent’s internal volume is 6.50 metres high by 8.60 metres wide, with double levels that house the apartments, each of approximately 200 square metres. The apartments feature internal vaults, walls adorned with warm earthy tones and gentle curves, paired with windows that offer breathtaking views of the tranquil gardens below. Despite the challenges, the end result was a stunning and unique vacation rental that has become a popular destination for travellers seeking a one-of-a-kind experience in Mexico.

In addition to its striking design, El Nido de Quetzalcóatl is also designed to be environmentally friendly. The house is built into the hillside, which helps to regulate the temperature and reduce the need for heating and cooling. The building materials used in the construction of the house are also sustainable, including natural materials such as stone and wood.

Access to the apartments is through the serpent’s back, which leads to a long corridor that descends to the first three houses. From there, a staircase leads down to the remaining seven apartments. At the landing of the staircase, a suspension bridge connects the last three apartments. The complex also has a three-story structure on the roof, which houses the water tank, guardhouse, machine room, and warehouses for each of the apartments.

The complex is surrounded by several streams that are essential elements for the ecosystem. They absorb carbon dioxide, produce oxygen, regulate temperature, and maintain humidity.
