Some places in the world make you feel right at home from the moment you arrive as if they’ve been waiting just for you. Paros, nestled in the heart of Greece’s Cyclades islands, is one of those magical places. With its charming villages, stunning beaches, and rich history, Paros offers an experience you’ll never forget. So, what is there to see and do on Paros? Here are some of my favourite spots…

A Visitor’s Guide to Paros

Parikia – The Island’s Capital

Parikia, the capital of Paros, is where we’ve always chosen to base ourselves. It’s the commercial hub of the island, with plenty of restaurants and cafés along the waterfront and tucked away in the winding alleys of the old town.

In true Cycladic style, Parikia’s old town is a maze of narrow, whitewashed streets that lead you past traditional Greek tavernas, trendy boutiques, and charming shops. Whether you need a bank, a supermarket, or a ferry to the mainland, Parikia has it all. It’s also home to Panagia Ekatontapiliani, the Church of a Hundred Doors—a must-see Byzantine monument that’s as rich in legend as it is in history.

Naoussa – The Postcard Village

Naoussa is like stepping into a postcard—fishing boats bobbing in the harbour, octopus drying in the sun, and bougainvillea-covered walls lining the cobbled lanes. It’s become quite the hotspot in the summer, attracting elegant tourists who come for the chic waterfront dining and buzzing nightlife.

Charming Villages Worth Exploring

Paros is full of hidden gems, especially in its picturesque villages:

Prodromos is quintessential Cyclades, with narrow alleyways, whitewashed houses, and an abundance of bougainvillea. Every corner is more beautiful than the last.

Marpissa is quieter than Prodromos—so quiet that on our visit, we didn’t see a single person. If you’re looking for peace and serenity, this is your spot.

Lefkes, perched on a hill, is a village you absolutely can’t miss. The car-free center of town is full of charming alleys, squares, and neoclassical buildings. Be sure to visit the marble church of Agia Triada, one of the island’s most photogenic spots.

A Sip of History – Visit the Moraitis Winery

Paros is not just about breathtaking views—its wines are something special, too. The Moraitis Winery, run by the same family since 1910, offers a journey through time as you explore the original stone cellars and vineyards. Make sure to try their Monemvassia wines, which capture the essence of the island’s indigenous grapes. Whether you’re in for a full winery tour or just a quick tasting, the experience is not to be missed.

Aliki – A Seafood Lover’s Paradise

Down south, Aliki is a coastal village that’s a little slice of paradise. It’s tranquil, with sandy beaches and a picturesque harbour where you’ll find tavernas serving up fresh seafood straight from the Aegean. The village’s laid-back vibe is perfect for those looking to unwind while enjoying some of the best fish dishes on the island.

Butterfly Valley – A Hidden Natural Gem

For nature lovers, Butterfly Valley is a magical spot. Located about 7 kilometres from Parikia, this nature reserve is an idyllic, shady retreat with century-old trees and lush vegetation. The butterflies resting in the bushes make for a perfect photo op, and it’s a great destination for families looking for a peaceful day out.

Piso Livadi – A Secluded Escape

On the east coast lies Piso Livadi, a sleepy fishing village that feels a world away from the bustling resorts. The whitewashed houses and blue shutters give it a postcard-perfect look, and its peaceful beaches like Logaras are ideal for a relaxing getaway. The port area is lined with traditional restaurants serving authentic island cuisine—don’t miss it!

Adventure Awaits – Windsurfing and Kite Surfing

For those seeking an adrenaline rush, the west coast of Paros is a windsurfer’s dream. Pounta Beach has long been a gathering spot for kiteboarders, with schools offering lessons for beginners and rentals for seasoned pros. Over on the east coast, Golden Beach is another windsurfing hotspot, with perfect conditions and schools to get you started.

Top Beaches to Visit

– Lageri Beach: Hidden on the northern coast near Santa Maria, this off-the-beaten-track beach offers crystal-clear waters and a peaceful stretch of golden sand. Access is by boat or a short walk from the main road.

– Golden Beach: A nearly 1-kilometre-long paradise on the northern coast, offering lounge chairs, nearby restaurants, and watersports activities. You won’t want to leave!

– Kolybithres Beach: Famous for its stunning rock formations, this beach near Naoussa offers organised facilities and a couple of tavernas to refuel after a swim.

– Lolantonis Beach: A favourite among locals, this wind-protected cove in the southwest is a peaceful escape from the crowds. A small café and nearby tavern keep you well-fed while you relax.

– Monastiri Beach: Nestled between rocky cliffs, Monastiri’s turquoise waters and comfortable sunbeds make it a picture-perfect beach day destination.

– Paralia Beach: Right in Parikia, this family-friendly beach offers calm waters and great amenities, including the popular Paralia Beach Bar, where you can grab a bite between swims.

Antiparos

A Short Hop to Antiparos

Just a 10-minute ferry ride from Pounta, Antiparos is a small island that has become a celebrity favourite. It’s home to a charming main village with craft shops and excellent restaurants, plus the famous caves in the island’s centre are worth exploring.

Where to Eat

– Little Green Rocket (Parikia): This Asian-fusion restaurant mixes local ingredients with international flavours. The dishes are beautifully prepared and bursting with taste.
– Kalokeri (Antiparos): One of the best meals we’ve had in Greece! The menu showcases local ingredients with a fine-dining twist, and the service is impeccable.
– Mikro Café (Parikia): A perfect spot for a snack or light bite. The homemade iced tea is a must-try, and the small plates are equally delightful.

Final Thoughts

Considering visiting the Greek Islands? Paros should absolutely be on your list. Its blend of natural beauty, rich history, and laid-back charm makes it one of my favourite places in the Cyclades.
