Having previously shared guides to the Cyclades Islands of Mykonos and Milos, I’m excited to now focus on perhaps the most famous destination in this group: the stunning and iconic island of Santorini.
Overview
Santorini is located in the southern Aegean Sea, and its unique geography was shaped by a massive volcanic eruption in the 17th century BC, creating the incredible caldera that the island is famous for today. With a population of 15,500 locals, the island sees a significant influx of tourists during the summer months, many of whom arrive via cruise ships, making Santorini a popular stop on Greek Island and Eastern Mediterranean itineraries.

How to Get There
Santorini has a small airport situated 6 km from the main town of Fira. The airport can handle up to six charter flights at a time and is well-connected to a wide range of European cities and UK airports, especially during the summer season.
Ferry services are also available, linking Santorini with other Cyclades Islands, Piraeus on the mainland, and Crete. Additionally, many visitors arrive on daily cruise ships. Since the island lacks a dedicated cruise ship harbour, ships anchor in the caldera bay, and passengers are brought ashore by tender boats. Most cruise passengers disembark at a small pier at the bottom of the cliff on which Fira is perched. From there, you can either walk up the mule path (not recommended) or take the cable car, which I highly suggest for the best experience.
What to See and Do
Visit Oia
Oia is perhaps the most photographed village in Santorini, and for good reason. This picture-perfect Greek village, with its whitewashed buildings and blue-domed roofs, offers breathtaking views of the sea and surrounding landscape. Oia is a bustling spot, especially popular at sunset when visitors flock to capture the legendary Santorini sunset. Parking is limited, so it’s best to arrive early and explore the cobbled streets and charming alleyways at your leisure.
Explore Pyrgos
Pyrgos is another beautiful village, but this one is nestled inland on a hilltop. It features winding alleys, whitewashed buildings, and a Venetian-built castle. Pyrgos also boasts a few exclusive restaurants that are well worth a visit.

Santo’s Winery Tasting
Santorini is known for its wine production, and a visit to Santo’s Winery is a must. Located above a small harbor, the winery offers stunning views of the bay and Fira. During our visit, we enjoyed a tasting of several locally-produced wines and learned about how the volcanic soil contributes to their unique flavors. The winery also has a restaurant with an impressive menu, making it a lovely spot to relax and take in the scenery.
Bustling Fira
Fira is the island’s main town, perched high above the caldera. It’s the busiest spot on the island, with a wide range of hotels, bars, and restaurants. Despite the crowds, Fira offers fantastic views and plenty of opportunities to simply sit back and watch the world go by.
Fira
Climb a Volcano
Yes, Santorini has a volcano, and you can hike to its summit! The volcano, which is still officially active, is located on Nea Kameni, an island in the centre of Santorini’s caldera. The hike takes you through rugged, lunar-like landscapes and volcanic ash fields, culminating at the crater’s rim. The panoramic views of Santorini and the surrounding islands are well worth the effort.
Sail Around the Caldera
Sailing along the caldera is an unforgettable experience, offering a unique perspective of Santorini’s dramatic coastline. As you glide along the crystal-clear waters, you’ll enjoy panoramic views of volcanic landscapes and the distinct architecture of Oia and Fira. If you’re lucky, your cruise may end with one of Santorini’s famous sunsets.
Visit a Beach
Santorini’s beaches are as unique as the island itself, with black, red, and white volcanic sands. Perissa and Kamari beaches offer black sand and vibrant beachfront promenades, while the Red Beach is famous for its striking red cliffs. White Beach, on the other hand, provides secluded coves and dramatic white cliffs. Other beaches worth exploring include Perivolos, Vlychada, and Ammoudi Bay. Just remember, the winds can be strong in some parts of the island, so plan your beach day accordingly.
Akrotiri Lighthouse
Perched on the southern tip of Santorini, the Akrotiri Lighthouse is one of the oldest lighthouses in Greece. It offers panoramic views of the rugged coastline and the volcanic caldera, making it a serene and romantic spot, especially at sunset.
Hike from Fira to Oia
The hike from Fira to Oia is a breathtaking 10.5 km trek along the caldera’s spine, passing through charming villages, dramatic clifftop scenery, and endless views of the Aegean Sea. This hike is a peaceful escape from the island’s busier areas and can be completed in 2.5 to 3 hours. However, with so many beautiful stops along the way, including Skaros Rock and several picturesque churches, you might want to turn it into a full-day adventure. Start early in the morning to avoid the midday heat!
Eating Out in Santorini
Santorini boasts a plethora of excellent restaurants, cafés, and bars where you can savour both authentic Greek and international cuisine. From traditional grilled dishes and seafood to rich feta and succulent olives, there’s something to please every palate. Don’t forget to visit a local bakery for a sweet or savoury treat, and end your evening at a classy cocktail bar with a view.
At night, you’ll notice a more relaxed atmosphere as the daytime crowds diminish once the cruise ships depart, making your dining experience even more enjoyable.
Where to Stay in Santorini
Most visitors prefer to stay in hotels or apartments on the caldera cliff, where the unique geography of the island allows for stunning views of the Aegean Sea from infinity pools. The properties are spread across the caldera villages of Oia, Imerovigli, Fira, Firostefani, Akrotiri, and Megalochori. While Oia and Imerovigli are known for their exclusive hotels, more affordable options can be found in Megalochori or Akrotiri, all offering spectacular views.
On a personal note, when I stayed on the island, I booked an apartment at Avianto Suites in Imerovigli. The location was excellent, with bars and restaurants just a short walk away. The highlight was the private balcony with a plunge pool and a picture-perfect view. The room was modern, comfortable, and well-equipped, making it a stay I can fully recommend.
Final Thoughts
Santorini is a stunning and picturesque island that everyone should experience at least once. While it can get crowded, especially when cruise ships are in port, its beauty and charm make it worth the visit.
