Oregon Coast is home to isolated beaches, rugged cliffs and breath-taking views of the Pacific and quaint seaside towns. Go whale watching at Coos Bay or hike along the coastline. Any good Oregon coast road-trip itinerary will start and end with an oceanfront view. The route along the US Highway 101 goes from Astoria in the North all the way down to the California border in the south, travelling past historic lighthouses, sand dunes and seaside towns.
Astoria:
Start the trip in the south, near the mouth of the Columbia River. Astoria is perfect for those interested in history with all kinds of museums and historical landmarks, including remains of shipwrecks. Be sure to see the famous Astoria Column and the Garden of Surging Waves. Did we mention Kindergarten Cop with Arnold Schwarzenegger was filmed here? Yes, it’s that Astoria.
Indian Beach Trail:
Ecola State Park is cherished along Oregon’s coast but the best spot is the hidden gem that is the Indian Beach Trail.
The views here are out-of-this-world and it’s not far from Cannon Beach which means you can kill two birds with one stone and visit both in the same day. Bring a camera – you may see bald eagles and grey whales.
Coos Bay:
Coos bay: the largest city on Oregon’s coast. In between Seattle and San Francisco, Coos Bay is a popular tourist stop. In summer, enjoy the Oregon Coast Music Festival or visit CAM, Coos Art Museum – a cornerstone for visual arts on Oregon’s Southern Coast. A popular hangout-spot is Mingus Park’s arboretum and oriental flower garden. You’ll find the picturesque fountains will look perfect for an Instagram post.
Bandon:
Bandon is a much smaller town but is full of charm. Based at the mouth of the Coquille River, Bandon is the perfect town to slowly explore; stroll along the boardwalk, experience the fresh seafood and spend some time taking in the gorgeous beaches. The old town of Bandon has a variety of gift shops, making it a great place to purchase your Oregon Coast souvenir.
